A man has been charged after a police officer was injured during an arrest in the state's Southern Region yesterday.
About 2.40pm (Monday 12 September 2022), officers attached to the Southern Region Enforcement Squad were patrolling Kanahooka Road, Kanahooka – about 12km south of Wollongong – and attempted to stop two unregistered trail bikes.
One of the riders allegedly rode his motorcycle towards a detective senior constable, striking him in his back causing him to fall to the ground with the motorcycle landing on top of him.
The rider – a 29-year-old man – was arrested at the scene.
The second rider – a 28-year-old man – allegedly fled the scene on foot; however, he was located in the backyard of a home nearby a short time later, where he was arrested.
The 41-year-old detective senior constable suffered hand and upper body fractures. He was taken to Wollongong Hospital suffering fractures to his wrist, clavicle and rib, and remains there in a stable condition.
The two riders were taken to the same hospital for assessment and have since been discharged.
The younger man was charged with five offences:
- drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous,
- drive motor vehicle during disqualification period,
- use unregistered registrable class a motor vehicle on road, use uninsured motor vehicle, and
- use class a vehicle number plate not correctly fixed.
The older man was charged with eight offences:
- drive motor vehicle during disqualification period,
- drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous,
- use unregistered registrable class a motor vehicle on road,
- use uninsured motor vehicle,
- use class a vehicle number plate not correctly fixed,
- use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc,
- use etc offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence, and
- assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm.
Both men were refused bail and will appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Tuesday 13 September 2022).
