Police Charge Man After Pursuit At Newcastle 28 March

A man will face court today charged following an alleged pursuit in Newcastle yesterday afternoon.

About 12.35pm yesterday (Thursday 27 March 2025), officers were patrolling Denison Street, Hamilton, when they attempted to stop a Kia Rio hatchback, which had been reported stolen from a Tighes Hill address.

When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit continued to Mayfield where the driver allegedly clipped the side mirror of an SUV and side-swiped a sedan.

Officers pursued the vehicle to Newcastle West where another vehicle was allegedly side-swiped, and the pursuit was terminated.

A short time later, the hatchback allegedly collided with an SUV on Stuart Avenue, Hamilton East, causing the SUV to collide with another vehicle.

The driver allegedly continued driving before crashing into another vehicle and leaving the scene on foot.

The drivers of the other vehicles were spoken to and declined medical treatment.

Officers pursued the man on foot through a residential area before the 45-year-old man was arrested on Corona Street.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with 18 offences:

  • police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously
  • take and drive conveyance without consent of owner
  • drive recklessly furiously or speed / manner dangerous
  • driver motor vehicle during disqualification period
  • negligent driving
  • use class A vehicle with unauthorised number plate affixed
  • use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention
  • hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty
  • fail to stop and assist after impact cause injury
  • Goods in personal custody suspected being stolen
  • Stalk / intimidate intend fear physical harm (two counts)
  • Not give particulars to other driver (six counts)

He was refused bail and will appear before Newcastle Local Court today (Friday 28 March 2025).
