Police Charge Man After Robbery - Tweed Heads South

A man has been charged after an alleged robbery at a jewellery store on the state's north coast.

About 11am yesterday (Friday 8 November 2024), emergency services were called to a shopping centre on Minjungbal Drive, Tweed Heads South, following reports of a robbery.

At the scene, police were told that a man allegedly entered a shop with a small bottle containing fuel, which he poured onto the counter of the shop before demanding jewellery.

The man allegedly fled the store with jewellery and cash.

No fire was lit, and no injuries were reported.

The man was pursued by members of the public, including two off-duty Queensland police officers, who arrested him as he attempted to enter a vehicle on Minjungbal Drive.

The vehicle, a red Hyundai i30 hatchback with QLD plates – believed to be driven by a woman – was last seen heading west along Machinery Drive.

Officers attached to Tweed/Byron Police District took the man, aged 28, to Tweed Heads Police Station, where he was charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon.

He was refused bail to appear at Lismore Local Court today (Saturday 9 November 2024).
