It will be alleged, about 4:15pm, the man set fire to vegetation on Sims Street. The burnt approximately 200 square metres of vegetation before it was extinguished. If not for the quick work of volunteer firefighters, the fire could have spread to nearby homes.
A 52-year-old man from Castletown was charged with:-
• One count of Wilfully Light or Cause to be Lit a Fire Likely to Injure or Damage.
He is due to appear before the Esperance Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 4 February 2025. This offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment.
