Merri-Bek Crime Investigation Unit detectives charged a man following an alleged unprovoked assault in Brunswick on 11 April.
It is alleged an unknown man approached a man walking along Blyth Street and assaulted him just before 3am.
The offender allegedly continued to seriously assault the man with a thick piece of wood before running from the scene.
A 56-year-old Brunswick man was taken to hospital where he remains with serious injuries.
Prior to the assault, it is alleged the same offender robbed a man on Blyth Street and stole his belongings about 12.30am and then at 2am threw a brick through the window of a premises on Lygon Street in Brunswick East.
It is alleged the offender also attempted to rob and assaulted a man in Southbank about 10.30am on 11 April.
A 30-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested yesterday and has been charged with attempted murder, intentionally cause serious injury, intentionally cause serious injury in circumstances of gross violence, two counts of robbery, attempted robbery and criminal damage.
He will appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
