A man has been charged following a police operation during which a shot was allegedly fired towards police near Coonabarabran yesterday.
About 8.50am (Wednesday 2 November 2022), officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District attended a home on Railway Street, Binnaway – about 35km south west of Coonabarabran – to speak to the occupant.
Police will allege when they attempted to speak to the man, he refused to leave the home, threatening officers.
A perimeter was established around the premises by local police and an operation commenced with the assistance of specialist tactical officers and negotiators.
About 8pm, the 58-year-old man allegedly discharged a firearm towards police, hitting a police shield, before he was arrested a short time later.
A crime scene was established at the location and, following a search of the premises, police seized various items including firearms and ammunition. All items will undergo forensic examination.
The man was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene, before being taken to Dubbo Police Station where he was charged with 11 offences:
- use carriage service to threaten serious harm,
- stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm,
- use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc,
- discharge firearm etc with intent to resist arrest,
- fire firearm manner likely injure persons/property,
- use unauthorised prohibited firearm,
- possess unauthorised prohibited firearm,
- possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority, and
- intimidate police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm.
He was refused bail and will appear at Dubbo Local Court today (Thursday 3 November 2022).
