A man has been charged over an alleged stabbing near Newcastle earlier today.
About 7.05am (Friday 21 June 2024), emergency services were called to Selwyn Street, Merewether, following reports of a stabbing.
Police have been told a man was allegedly stabbed following a confrontation with another man, who is alleged to have broken into a neighbouring property.
The 33-year-old man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a stab wound to his leg and hand.
He has since been taken to the John Hunter Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.
A crime scene was established and inquiries into the incident commenced by officers attached to Newcastle City Police District.
Following a search of the area, police located and arrested 23-year-old old man at a nearby unit on Wilton Street a short time later.
He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence.
He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court tomorrow (Saturday 22 June 2024).
