A man has been charged after shots were fired during an alleged armed robbery in Sydney's south west yesterday.
A man entered a jewellery store inside a shopping centre on Kurrajong Road, Carnes Hill, about 4.40pm (Monday 24 October 2022), and approached a 52-year-old male employee.
Police will allege in court the man threatened the employee with a firearm before discharging the gun and smashing several glass display cabinets with a hammer.
The man allegedly took jewellery before running from the store and riding away on a motorcycle.
The employee was not physically injured and alerted police.
Officers attached to Liverpool City Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced a large-scale search with assistance from neighbouring commands and specialist police.
A short time later, police saw a motorcycle that matched the description of the bike seen leaving the shopping centre, with a rider and a pillion passenger.
Police followed the bike to Busby where the pillion passenger got off as the motorcycle rode away.
As officers approached the man, he allegedly threatened them with a firearm before dropping the gun and running.
He was arrested nearby after a short foot pursuit.
When the man was searched, police seized items alleged to have been stolen from the jewellery store, along with ammunition and methylamphetamine. All items will undergo further examination.
The 23-year-old man was taken to Liverpool Hospital under police guard for treatment, before being taken to Liverpool Police Station this morning.
He has been charged with two counts of fire firearm at other than dwelling disregarding safety, and one count each of robbery while armed with dangerous weapon, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, possess unregistered unauthorised prohibited firearm in public place, and resist/hinder police officer in execution of duty.
He was also charged with unrelated offences relating to an alleged home invasion in Busby about 5.35am last Saturday (22 October 2022).
The Busby man was refused bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court later today (Tuesday 25 October 2022).
State Crime Command's Robbery and Serious Crime Squad is now taking carriage of the investigation as inquiries continue to locate the second man.
