Police Charge Man Over Assault - Merewether

A man has been charged over his alleged involvement in an assault at Merewether over the weekend.

About 12.15am yesterday (Sunday 11 August 2024) emergency services were called to Hickson Street, Merewether, following reports of an assault.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District attended the scene and were told a group of people were allegedly assaulted by several men, who left the scene before police arrived.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated four men at the scene - all aged 22 - before they were taken to John Hunter Hospital with a range of facial injuries.

Following inquiries, police arrested an 18-year-old man at a home in Maitland yesterday (Sunday 11 August 2024).

He was taken to Maitland Police Station where he was charged with two counts of recklessly cause grievous bodily harm in company, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company, and affray.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 12 September 2024.

Inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
