A man has been charged with attempted murder and assaulting police following an incident in Mayfield earlier this month.
About 4.10pm on Saturday 15 February 2025, police were called to Hanbury Street, Mayfield, following a concern for welfare.
Upon arrival at the scene, a man ran from a unit block towards police and allegedly assaulted one of the officers with a bladed tactical shovel.
A taser was deployed which was unsuccessful, and the man was shot by police.
Officers immediately rendered assistance to the man prior to the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.
The 46-year-old man was taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
Following inquiries, the 46-year-old man was arrested at John Hunter Hospital yesterday (Sunday 23 February 2025).
He was charged with attempted murder, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence, affray, and common assault (DV).
He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court via a bedside hearing today (Monday 24 February 2025), where he was formally refused bail to appear before the same court tomorrow (Tuesday 25 February 2025).
A critical incident investigation team led by Hunter Valley Police District established Strike Force Arbor to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The ongoing investigation is also subject to an independent review.
