Police Charge Man With Castletown Scrub Fires

Esperance Detectives have charged a 24-year-old man as a result of their investigation into two scrub fires that occurred in Castletown on Wednesday 5 February 2025.

It will be alleged about 7:20am, the man set fire to vegetation in bushland on Hastings Crescent and Mondrain Avenue. It will be further alleged he set a second fire about 10:10am in bushland bordering Goldfields Road, Daw Drive and Ormonde Street.

Fortunately, in both instances, Department of Fire and Emergency Services were able to extinguish the fires before they spread to nearby homes.

The 24-year-old man from Castletown has been charged with:

• Two counts of Wilfully Light or Cause to be Lit a Fire Likely to Injure or Damage.

This offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment.

He is due to appear before the Esperance Magistrates Court on 8 April 2025.
