Police Charge Two Men After Fawkner Arson Attack

Detectives from Taskforce Lunar charged two men on Friday as part of their investigation into a fire at a business in Fawkner on Thursday morning.

A 19-year-old Westmeadows man was arrested in Westmeadows on Friday morning with assistance from the Special Operations Group.

He was charged with two counts of criminal damage by fire (arson), possess prohibited weapon and possess cartridge ammunition.

A gel blaster imitation firearm was located during a search warrant at his address.

A 35-year-old man from Broadmeadows was arrested in Broadmeadows later that afternoon.

He was charged with two counts of criminal damage by fire (arson) and possess prohibited weapon.

The duo was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 12 August.

The charges follow a fire at a convenience store on Major Road shortly before 6am on Thursday, 16 May.

A vehicle was driven into the business which breached the security door, and the store was subsequently set alight.

Two men then fled the scene in a previously stolen vehicle, before setting it alight in Erinbank Crescent, Westmeadows.

Nobody was physically injured during the incident but the store sustained damage.
