Two teenagers have been charged following an alleged break and enter and pursuit in the state's north west over the weekend.
About 1.30am on Wednesday 20 November 2024, officers attached to New England Police District commenced an investigation after reports of a break and enter at a motel on Dangar Street, Armidale.
Police were told two people, wearing in all black, allegedly broke into a room and stole the keys to a Volkswagen Golf, before driving away in the vehicle.
About 6.30pm on Wednesday 20 November 2024, New England Traffic and Highway Patrol attempted to stop the stolen vehicle on Castledoyle Road, Armidale.
When the vehicle failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.
About 5pm on Thursday 21 November 2024, police located the vehicle travelling on Dumaresq Dam Road and where a second pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit was terminated on Old Inverell Road due to speed.
A short time later, police located the stolen vehicle on Drew Street, where it allegedly crashed into a parked vehicle.
The driver, a 17-year-old boy and passenger, a 17-year-old girl, were detained by members of the public before being arrested by police.
The teens were taken to Armidale police station, where the boy was charged with the following offences,
- drive conveyance taken w/o consent of owner,
- never licensed person drive vehicle on road,
- police pursuit - not stop - drive at speed
- possess housebreaking implements, and
- deal with property proceeds of crime under $100,000
He appeared before a children's court on Friday 22 November 2024, where he was formally refused bail to appear before the same children's court on Thursday 5 December 2024.
The girl was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner and breach of bail.
