Police Declare Critical Incident in Wollongong Operation

A critical incident has been declared after a man was injured during a police operation in the Illawarra.

About 7.30am today (Wednesday 18 December), police attended a third-floor unit in Bligh Street, Wollongong, as part of an ongoing investigation.

As police arrived, a 50-year-old man fell when he allegedly tried to climb down the building.

NSW Ambulance treated him for facial, head and spinal injuries before he was taken to Wollongong Hospital. He has now been airlifted to St George Hospital in a serious condition.

A critical incident team from South Coast Police District will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident is also subject to an independent review.
