Police and emergency services are currently on the scene of a single vehicle fatal crash in Bimbourie.
Investigators believe the vehicle was travelling along the Calder Highway when it crashed into a tree near the intersection of Edgecumbe Road about 3.20am.
The driver of the vehicle, a yet to be identified man, died at the scene.
His female passenger was trapped for a short time before being freed and airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.
The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be established and the investigation is ongoing.
North bound has been diverted to Speed Road and South bound at Patchewollock-Sea Lake Road until further notice.
