Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash at Taggerty which occurred earlier this morning, Victoria Police say.
Emergency services were notified after a farmer found a car in a paddock near the Maroondah Highway just after 5pm.
Police believe the vehicle left the highway and travelled down an embankment before crashing through trees and coming to rest in the paddock sometime after 7am.
The male driver, who was the sole occupant and still to be formally identified, was found deceased at the scene.
Police are investigating if speed was a contributing factor in the crash.
