An investigation is underway after a man died in a head-on crash in the state's far west this morning.
About 10am (Thursday 11 November 2021), emergency services were called to the Barrier Highway, about 70km east of Broken Hill, after a Holden Captiva and Nissan X-Trail collided head-on.
Officers from Barrier Police District attended and with the assistance of passers-by, removed the occupants of both vehicles.
Attempts were made to revive the Holden driver; however, the 61-year-old man he died at the scene.
Three passengers – two men, aged 39 and 40, and a 40-year-old woman - were injured. They were taken to Broken Hill Hospital for treatment.
The Nissan driver, a 71-year-old man, was seriously injured and was also taken to hospital.
A crime scene was established and has since been forensically examined.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
The Barrier Highway was closed and has since been reopened.
