A man has been charged after a police officer was allegedly punched in the face and knocked unconscious in Sydney's south-west last night.
About 1.10am (Sunday 14 February 2021), officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command were called to a home on Huntingdale Avenue, near the Hume Highway, Lansvale, after receiving a noise complaint.
Upon arrival, police located a man and a woman – both aged 23 and known to each other – arguing outside the home, before a physical altercation occurred.
Police intervened and the pair separated.
While officers were speaking to the woman, the man approached a male sergeant and following a confrontation, it's alleged he punched the sergeant in the jaw, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground.
The sergeant was unconscious for a brief period, and treated by other officers at the scene, before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.
He was treated for a laceration to the back of the head and facial swelling, before being taken to Liverpool Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.
As the man was being arrested, it's alleged a probationary constable was pushed.
He was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, assault officer in execution of duty, two counts of resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, and affray.
The Chester Hill man has been refused bail to appear Liverpool Local Court tomorrow (Monday 15 February 2021).
Inquiries are continuing.
