Police Lay Charges - Assault Police In Southern Region

Northern Territory Police have arrested two persons in relation to two separate assault police incidents that occurred in Tennant Creek and Alice Springs over the weekend.

Around 11.30pm on Friday 16 August, local police were responding to an incident in Meyers Street in Tennant Creek, during which a 29-year-old male was arrested.

The offender was being transported to a police vehicle when he allegedly spat in the face of one of the officers. The offender was conveyed to the Tennant Creek Watch House where he also allegedly spat on the legs of two other officers. He has been charged with three counts of Assault police in relation to this incident.

At 1.45am on Saturday 17 August, Alice Springs police members were attending an incident on the Stuart Highway. As a result, a 41-year-old female was conveyed to the Alice Springs Watch House, where she allegedly spat on the face of a police officer.

She was processed into custody without further incident and has subsequently been charged with one count of Assault police.

Deputy Commissioner Martin Dole said, "Assaulting a police officer while they are carrying out their duties to serve and protect the community is absolutely unacceptable.

"Spitting on someone is particularly disgusting.

"The two officers who were spat on to the face have had to attend their local hospital in order to get tests done to check for exposure to diseases, which adds unnecessary stress to their lives.

"The behaviour of these individuals is appalling, and anyone who engages in such actions will face prosecution."
