The Northern Territory Police Dog Operations Unit have arrested and charged 5 adults and summonsed another 3 following a targeted operations into the illegal distribution of illicit substances into the Arnhem Land region.
The operation highlights the continued partnerships between community and members from the Dog Operations Unit, Katherine, Gapuwiyak, Nhulunbuy and Groote Eylandt police.
These arrests have stemmed from targeted patrols conducted between Katherine and Nhulunbuy, that have resulted in a total of 20 grams of methamphetamine, 20 grams of cocaine, 438 grams of non-medicinal cannabis and 136 kilograms of kava seized. Police have also seized a vehicle believed to have been used in the offending along with a quantity of cash to be alleged to have been derived as a result of the illegal distribution.
In a separate incident, two women aged 27 and 45 were arrested following a search warrant at a residence in Groote Eylandt.
During the search, 964g of non-medical cannabis, drug paraphernalia and a large quantity of cash was seized, and the pair were charged with:
- Possess commercial quantity schedule 2 dangerous drug
- Possess tainted property
- Supply commercial quantity cannabis
One was remanded to appear 18th December 2023 and another Bailed to appear in 2024.
The carriage of illicit substances into any community, but more particularly vulnerable remote communities in the Northern Territory will not be tolerated.
