The Northern Territory Police Force have arrested a 14-year-old female in relation to an assault police incident in Leanyer yesterday morning.

Around 10:15am, Casuarina General Duties officers were conducting patrols at a shopping complex on Vanderlin Drive when they observed a female youth who appeared to be "Chroming" and who was significantly under the influence of a volatile substances, who needed care.

While officers were placing her into protective custody, she bit one officer on the wrist and then again on the finger, piercing the skin on both occasions. The youth was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment, accompanied by police.

The officer also received medical treatment, including a tetanus shot.

Investigations remain ongoing.

Commander Daniel Bacon said, "This incident highlights the incredibly difficult and dangerous positions that frontline officers are put in every day.

"What is often not considered with offences of this nature is that this officer now has the mental anguish of not knowing what, if any, diseases she may have contracted which will affect her and her relationship with her partner for a considerable time until tests determine otherwise.

"It will also prevent her donating blood now for 3 months, something of which the officer is passionate about to assist others in giving back to the Community.

"Offences of this nature are disgusting and have far reaching repercussions on our officers.

"Offenders will be held to account for their actions.

"I commend the officers involved for their professionalism under challenging circumstances in protecting the community and a youth that was in need of care.

"I urge members of the public if you see anyone in need of assistance that are abusing volatile substances to make contact on 131 444."
