Detectives from the Northern Territory Police Drug and Organised Crime Section (DOCS) have arrested a 62-year-old man following the interception of methamphetamine concealed in a package delivered to a Bakewell residence last week.
On 10 September 2024, Australian Border Force (ABF) officers in Darwin intercepted a suspicious package sent from Thailand. The package, addressed to a Bakewell property, contained 389.9 grams of methamphetamine hidden within the motor housing of a water pump. Further investigation revealed that an identical package from the same consignor in Thailand had previously been delivered to the same address.
On 13 September 2024, DOCS Detectives, in collaboration with ABF and Australian Federal Police (AFP), executed a controlled delivery of a substituted package to the Bakewell residence. The recipient, a 62-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.
Following the arrest, a search warrant was executed at the property, resulting in the seizure of several previously delivered packages from Thailand, including the identical package delivered on 10 September 2024.
The man has been charged with supplying a Schedule 1 Dangerous Drug (Commercial Quantity) and is set to appear before the Darwin Local Court on 17 September 2024.
Detective Superintendent Lee Morgan of the Drug and Organised Crime Section said, "This arrest is the result of excellent collaboration between Northern Territory Police, the Australian Border Force, and the Australian Federal Police. We are committed to disrupting the illegal drug trade and will continue to target those involved in the supply of dangerous substances."
Investigations are ongoing, and anyone with further information is urged to contact police on 131 444 or report anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
