Police Make Arrests - Assault Police At Wadeye

The Northern Territory Police Force have arrested two females in relation to an assault police incident that occurred last night in Wadeye.

Around 9:30pm, police received reports of a domestic violence incident occurring at a residential address in the community. Local members attended the scene and apprehended a 30-year-old female who was allegedly intoxicated and immediately resisted arrest.

The female began hitting her head on the police vehicle, resulting in members ground stabilising her to prevent further self-harm. At this time, a 14-year-old female allegedly tackled one of the members causing him to fall on his back. The 30-year-old female allegedly began biting the officer's ankle multiple times.

A large crowd that had gathered to watch, began throwing rocks at the members with one of the rocks striking a member in the back.

OC spray was deployed on the 30-year-old offender to prevent further assaults and both females were subsequently apprehended.

The two officers attended the Wadeye Clinic to receive treatment for their injuries and were provided with tetanus shots.

The offenders remain in custody with charges expected to follow.

The Northern Territory Commissioner of Police Michael Murphy said, "Our officers work incredibly hard across the Territory and do not expect to be, nor they should be, attacked or assaulted, especially while keeping victims of domestic violence safe.

"Assaulting a police officer is a serious crime, and there will be no tolerance for this behaviour.

"It is abundantly clear that alcohol continues to play a significant role in enabling harm within our communities.

"I want to acknowledge the bravery and professionalism of the officers involved in last night's incident and express my absolute support for all our members who face similar challenges daily.

"We will continue to advocate for stronger measures and leadership to address alcohol-related harm in Wadeye and protect our frontline officers and the communities they serve.

"A great deal of work will be required around reducing harm to the community before I endorse any licensing arrangement in Wadeye."
