Police Presence Holds as Sydney NYE 2024 Festivities End

NSW Police will remain throughout the CBD and surrounding suburbs as crowds leaving New Year's Eve celebrations make their way home across Sydney.

Operation New Year's Eve 2024 commenced yesterday (Tuesday 31 December 2024), to ensure community safety as significant crowds converged on the CBD, Sydney Harbour foreshore and at events across the state.

General duties police officers from multiple Police Area Commands and Districts across the state were assisted by specialist police from Traffic & Highway Patrol Command, Police Transport Command, the Public Order and Riot Squad, Operations Support Group, Licensing Police, Mounted and Dog Command, Marine Area Command, and PolAir.

Over 205,000 people descended on vantage points around the Sydney harbour foreshore throughout the evening to enjoy both the 9pm and midnight fireworks displays.

Across the Sydney CBD and harbour foreshore areas, 36 arrests were made for various offences, including assault, affray, robbery and knife possession related offences.

Police are also investigating the alleged stabbing of a teenage boy in Guildford.

Just before 10.40pm yesterday, officers attached to Cumberland Police Area Command were called to Bright Park following reports of a stabbing.

On arrival, police were told a group of males were allegedly letting off fireworks before a 17-year-old boy was stabbed in the back. The offender then allegedly fled the scene.

The boy was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Operation New Year's Eve Commander, Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna, said most members of the public were generally well-behaved and celebrated the New Year safely.

"Once again Sydney welcomed 2025 with an iconic fireworks display and the vast majority people enjoyed their night safely and without incident," Assistant Commissioner McKenna said.

"Unfortunately, police were kept busy by a handful of revellers doing the wrong thing, but those people were dealt with quickly.

"The safety of the NSW community is of the utmost importance to us, so for those continuing to celebrate until the morning, we will have police in the air, on the roads and water to ensure it is a night to remember for all the right reasons."
