Police Search For Missing Hiker Underway - Tweed/Byron

A search is underway for a hiker believed to be missing at Wollumbin, previously known as Mt Warning, on the state's far north coast.

Csaba Varga, aged 54, is believed to have been hiking at Wollumbin when he was last heard from about 9.30pm on Saturday 7 December 2024.

Police were told that the man spoke with a friend that night, indicating he was lost in the Wollumbin National Park.

When he was unable to be contacted yesterday morning (Sunday 8 December 2024), police attached to Tweed/Byron Police District were notified and commenced inquiries into his whereabouts.

Officers commenced a search of the Wollumbin area from 12pm yesterday where they located the man's car in the carpark.

The search was suspended overnight before resuming at 8am today (Monday 9 December 2024) with local police, assisted by NSW Ambulance, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, NSW SES, RFS and VRA.

Csaba is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 180-185cm tall, of medium build, with grey hair and facial hair, and blue eyes.
