Police search for missing spear fisherman, Sudbury Reef

A search is continuing today for a spear fisherman reported missing to police yesterday afternoon at Sudbury Reef off Cairns.

At 4.15pm, the 26-year-old man became separated from his 56-year-old fishing companion and failed to return to the boat.

Cairns Water Police commenced a search and rescue operation (SAR) with the assistance of aerial assets and the Coast Guard but the man was not located.

The Water Police Vessel, the Perry Irwin remained in the area overnight and the helicopter search recommenced at first light today.

Police divers are due to arrive in Cairns today to assist with the ongoing search.

Both men are from the local area.
