Police are appealing for public assistance with an investigation into a fatal crash in Blue Mountains area last year.
About 11pm on Friday 20 December 2024, emergency services were called to the intersection of the Great Western Highway and Kitchener Road, Leura, following reports a person was found unresponsive on the road.
On arrival, officers attached to Blue Mountains Police Area Command found a 51-year-old man with serious injuries to his head and torso.
He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, he could not be revived.
Initial inquiries have led police to believe the man was walking between Leura Railway Station and the Great Western Highway near Kitchener Road, about 11pm before he was hit by a car.
It is believed the man was lying on the ground prior to being hit by the car.
The driver of the vehicle – a 50-year-old man – attended Katoomba Police Station on the same day to assist police with their inquiries and was taken to Katoomba Hospital for mandatory testing.
As inquiries continue, police have issued images of the man hit by the car as they appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
Inspector Jason Hogan from Crash Investigation Unit said officers are still investigating the man's whereabouts prior to being hit by the car.
"Police have today released images of the man in the hope that they will spark someone's memory who has information on the man's movements prior to being found on the road," Inspector Hogan said.
"The man's family deserve closure and any information – whether it seems trivial or insignificant – could be the final piece in helping officers find out what happened to him."
"Anyone who witnessed the incident or who knows how the man came to be on the Great Western Highway, between 10.40pm and 11pm on Friday 20 December 2024 to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
