Police Shooting Prompts Critical Incident in Manning

A critical incident investigation is underway after a man was shot by police at Taree this afternoon.

About 12.25pm (Thursday 2 January 2025), police were called to Rouse Street, Wingham, following several reports a man had fired shots into the air.

Police attached to Manning/Great Lakes Police District attended and commenced a search of the area.

Police later engaged with a man in the car park of the Manning Base Hospital about 12.55pm (Thursday 2 January 2025).

During the engagement, the man allegedly pointed a firearm at the attending officers, and he was shot by police.

Officers immediately rendered assistance to the man prior to the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

The man – believed to be aged in his 30s – was taken into the Manning Base Hospital where he died a short time later.

No officers or other persons were physically injured.

A critical incident investigation team from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation is also subject to an independent review.
