Police have targeted speeding and dangerous drivers during a one-day high visibility traffic operation across the north west of the state.
Operation Furious is focused on reducing excessive speed and dangerous driving throughout the state.
The operation ran from 4am on Wednesday 6 November 2024 to 3am on 7 November 2024 targeting speeding in the north west metropolitan and western regions.
During the high-visibility operation, police conducted 1977 roadside breath tests and made two drink driving detections.
There were 140 random drug tests conducted, with 13 positive results detected.
Police issued 226 speeding infringements, 131 other offences and laid 22 charges.
Incidents of note:
- Shortly before 5am on Wednesday 6 November 2024, Cowra Highway Patrol officers detected a Toyota Hilux allegedly speeding on Darbys Falls Road, Cowra. Police attempted to stop the 21-year-old driver and when he failed to do so, a pursuit was initiated. Police allege the driver travelled through Cowra exceeding the speed limit and disobeyed road signs. The driver came to a stop before he was arrested and taken to Chifley Police Station. He was charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive at speed; drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous and class A motor vehicle exceed speed more than 45km/h – estimated. The man was granted bail to appear at Cowra Local Court on Tuesday 26 November 2024.
- About 9.20am on Wednesday 6 November 2024, officers attached to Parramatta Highway Patrol stopped a VW Golf on Alfred Street, Parramatta, for random breath and oral fluid tests. A 52-year-old man was driving and held a learner's licence. He was accompanied by a 52-year-old woman who held an unrestricted driver's licence. Both drug tests returned positive results and they were arrested for the purpose of a second test, which also returned positive results. Police are awaiting test results before further action may be taken.
- About 10am on Wednesday 6 November 2024, Lithgow Highway Patrol police stopped a 21-year-old woman allegedly speeding 20km/h above the limit on Chifley Road, Dargan. She allegedly tested positive to a roadside drug test and was issued with a 24-hour driving prohibition notice. She was also issued with a traffic infringement notice for the speeding offence. Police are awaiting the results of the oral fluid test before further action may be taken. Shortly before 2pm, the woman was again stopped in Bell. She was issued with a future court attendance notice for fail or refuse to comply with prohibition or requirement and will appear at Lithgow Local Court on Thursday 19 December 2024.
Road users should remember that all police across the state can and will undertake Random Alcohol and Drug Testing - anytime anywhere means you need a plan B.
