Police Update 1: Police Incident, Annerley

Police declared a crime scene in Annerley following an incident this morning where a police officer and a man were shot.

Officers were initially called to a Tamar Street address around 9:13am following reports of a disturbance.

It is alleged upon arrival officers located a 26-year-old man, with no connection to the address, armed with a piece of wood in an agitated state.

It is further alleged an altercation occurred where the man lunged for the male Senior Constable's service firearm, which resulted in the Senior Constable being shot in the left thigh.

Officers allege the second male officer, a First Year Constable (FYC), discharged his service firearm, striking the man in his abdomen.

Additional police arrived on the scene to provide support and as the man was allegedly still being combative, a taser was deployed in an attempt to subdue the man while other officers worked to restrain him.

The male FYC sustained a bite wound during the incident.

Medical assistance was immediately rendered to all injured parties.

The man and the two officers were transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital for treatment.

The man remains in a serious condition.

The Senior Constable is currently in a stable condition and the First Year Constable has since been discharged from hospital.

No other police officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.

A crime scene was declared and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Rhys Wildman says the Service is committed to providing support to all officers involved.

"Police is an inherently dangerous occupation which incidents such as this highlight," he said.

"I thank all police for the great work they do each day. Particularly those officers involved today and those who assisted their colleagues."

"I would particularly like to thank the First Year Constable and other officers who attended for their actions in providing critical first aid to the seriously injured officer while responding on an ongoing threat."

The matter is now under investigation by Ethical Standards Command with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
