NT Police have arrested a 45-year-old man in relation to a hit and run incident in Parap on 3 November 2023.
Police received a report just before 5am of a vehicle rollover and a cyclist injured at the intersection of Stuart Highway and Woolner Road.
The offender left the scene on foot and the male cyclist was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition. He currently remains in hospital receiving treatment.
The man was arrested in a Daly River Region community yesterday after handing himself in to police. He was charged with:
- Hit and run cause serious harm
- Drive motor vehicle cause serious harm
- Careless driving - resulting in serious harm
- Not assist after crash
- Fail to report a crash
- Drive unregistered motor vehicle
- Drive uninsured motor vehicle
- Drive a motor vehicle while unlicensed
Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said "Every driver involved in a crash is required by law to stop, render assistance to others, and then contact police."
"If you are unwilling to stop after being involved in a crash, then don't drive in the Northern Territory."
Major Crash detectives are continuing to urge anyone who witnessed the crash or stopped at the scene immediately after the crash, who are yet to speak to police, to make contact on 131 444. Police are particularly interested to speak to a female witness at the scene. She is described as Caucasian in appearance, with shoulder-length brown hair, and wearing a white Adidas shirt, dark-coloured long pants and thongs.
The man was bailed to appear in Wadeye Local Court on 6 February 2024.
