Northern Territory Police have charged 14 youth in relation to a riot at a youth detention facility earlier this month.
On 3 April 2024, emergency services responded to a large disturbance at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in Berrimah.
Police promptly attended, established a cordon and provided assistance to Don Dale staff on-site upon the request of the Superintendent of the facility.
NT Fire and Rescue Service efficiently extinguished a fire within one of the buildings.
The incident was resolved safely with no youths suffering injuries, however, an attending police officer was allegedly struck with a projectile. The officer suffered an injury to their leg, requiring hospital treatment.
Detectives from Serious Crime have been investigating the incident and 14 youth, 12 males and 2 females, have now been charged. In total 79 charges have now been laid across the cohort allegedly involved, with all being charged with Engage in Riot and Damage Property, amongst other offences including arson and assault worker.
Significant damage was caused to the facility during the riot.
Investigations remain ongoing into the incident.
