The Tasmanian Liberal Government has welcomed a new partnership with the Ponting Foundation and Cricket Tasmania that will raise money for young Tasmanians with cancer and their families.
The Hobart Hurricanes' home Big Bash League (BBL) fixture tonight against the Sydney Thunder will be the inaugural Ponting Foundation fundraising match.
Minister for Health, Jacquie Petrusma, said the Tasmanian Government looked forward to working with the Ponting Foundation and Cricket Tasmania for this great cause.
"This is an exciting new partnership that will become an annual fixture in the Tasmanian sporting calendar for the benefit of Tasmanian children with cancer," Minister Petrusma said.
"Funds raised from the campaign will support families who have a child diagnosed with cancer from across the State, from Smithton to Dover and Queenstown to Bicheno.
"Cancer care is highly specialised and can involve extensive amounts of travel and appointments – and this funding will go a long way to providing support for families.
"As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we are committed to delivering a better health system for all Tasmanians."
Ponting Foundation co-founder, Ricky Ponting, said the Foundation is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of young cancer patients and their families in Tasmania.
"The Ponting Foundation is a long-time supporter of Tasmanian cancer care and support services, having provided funding for a range of initiatives including family accommodation, hospice support and cancer education," Mr Ponting said.
"I urge Tasmanians to get onboard and support this fundraising match – it'll be a fun night for a great cause.
"The game will be the beginning of an important campaign for us to support Tasmanian children with cancer."
Cricket Tasmania CEO, Dominic Baker, said the Ponting Foundation has made an incredible difference in the lives of many.
"As a Board Member, I understand the importance of this Foundation and the great work that Rianna and Ricky Ponting, James Henderson, and their families do to support the families of kids with cancer in Tasmania," Mr Baker said.
"The Hurricanes family will wrap their hands around this worthwhile cause for the match tonight against the Sydney Thunder and help us raise as much money as possible for the Ponting Foundation, while hopefully witnessing another big Hurricanes win!"
