Residents with a swimming pool or spa on their property are required to register their pool/spa with Council and go through the process of receiving a certificate of compliance on their barrier, ensuring the safety of those on the property.
In 2019, the Victorian Government introduced legislation that impacts all current and future swimming pool and spa owners. The intention of the legislation is to improve swimming pools and spa barrier safety.
Campaspe Shire Mayor, Cr Rob Amos said residents have had five years to begin the process and enact changes to their barriers.
"It's a timely reminder to residents who have swimming pools and spas that they need to register these with Council and make sure their barriers are compliant with law. A Building Inspector or Building Surveyor will be able to conduct the inspection and provide feedback on what needs to be improved to achieve compliance.
"The process will be new to most residents, however it's important that it's done. It will help to ensure that households in the shire meet the safety regulations imposed by the state government and ultimately keep those on the property safe," he said.
Once inspections and any modifications are successfully achieved, a copy of your certificate must be emailed to Council for their records and renewed every four years.
"The deadline to supply Council with a Certificate of Barrier Compliance across the shire was 1 June 2024. The building team have extended this until the end of July, giving households ample opportunity to get their certificates in.
"Following the extended timeline, fines for non-compliance will be issued and are upwards of $1,800," Cr Amos said.
