As the weather warms up, pools around the City of Logan are being prepped and preened for another summer of fun.
As part of that preparation, property owners, parents and carers are being encouraged to become a 'pool safety hero' to make sure little lives stay safe.
Planning Chair, Councillor Jon Raven, said Logan City Council wants people to check their pool fences and gates to ensure compliance with Queensland's pool safety laws.
"It only takes a moment for a child to slip away from supervision and tragedy can happen if your pool isn't properly enclosed," Cr Raven said.
"However, there are a few simple things you can do to earn your pool safety hero badge to make summer as fun as possible."
Pool safety heroes should:
- check pool barriers meet current safety standards
- never lock or prop open pool gates
- ensure pool gates are self-latching
- put phones away and always supervise kids
- teach kids how to be safe around pools
- learn CPR.
"All pool owners have a responsibility to comply with the legislation," Cr Raven said.
"We want to help owners through education and support if an issue is found in the first instance.
"Fines or legal action are a last resort if someone doesn't take the necessary steps to become compliant."
