Mildura Rural City Council's Youth Engagement Services team is once again partnering with HOTFM Community Radio to run a Youth Radio Program.

The program, which made its debut in early 2024, proved a huge hit with participants and listeners alike, prompting its return in the New Year.

The program provides young people aged 12 to 25 with an opportunity to plan and deliver a youth radio program, paving the way for the next generation of radio stars to learn the tricks of the trade.

Through the initiative, participants will create, plan and present content on air, and represent local and new music, arts and ideas.

Mildura Mayor Helen Healy said the Youth Radio Program was a great opportunity for young people to work together to deliver content aimed at their peers, while providing invaluable learning opportunities.

"This program will introduce participants to radio, including teaching them how to develop a run sheet, select music and write a segment script," Cr Healy said.

"They will also learn more about community radio and why it's important, learn more about interview techniques and program production and development.

"I personally know many young people, including my own children, who have gained valuable experience at HOTFM Community Radio that has built confidence, connections and informed careers."

2024 Youth Radio participant Annie Plummer, 18, encouraged eligible young people to sign up for the program.

"I first found out about the program through a friend's mum, who knew I had an interest about getting into radio, and that I was looking for some experience," Annie said.

"I loved the learning aspects of the program. We got to form this team, and express our own interests and talk passionately with like-minded people about topics important to us.

"My advice to those interested would be to put in all the effort you can, and do things you want to. If there's something you want to talk about or do the team will help you."

Annie said that the program offered something different for youth to get involved in, while opening the doors for future careers in radio and podcasting.

"It's something different, and it's rare that you hear people our age on radio," Annie said. "It's very easy for people with no experience to get involved, and you certainly get armed with all the skills needed.

"If you're interested, just give it a go!"

Expressions of interest are open until Friday 10 January 2025, with those interested encouraged to complete an online expression of interest form at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/YouthRadio
