Strengthening port security in Comoros is the focus of a training workshop in Moroni, Comoros (18-22 September). The event brings together 26 participants, including Port Facility Security Officers (PFSOs) from Moroni, Anjouan and Mohéli ports as well as representatives of the Port Authority (Société Comorienne des Ports (SCP), customs, Gendarmerie Nationale and the Designated Authority (Agence National des Affaires Maritimes (ANAM)).
Participants are consolidating their knowledge and skills in developing and implementing port facility security plans (PFSPs) in order to perform their duties in accordance with the relevant provisions of pertinent IMO regulations - SOLAS Chapter XI-2 and the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code). The training will provide participants with a solid foundation in oversight roles and responsibilities of Designated Authorities. The workshop is the latest in a series of activities under the European Union-funded project on Port Security and Safety of Navigation in Eastern and Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean, which involves nine participating countries, including Comoros. Under the project, IMO aims to assist participating countries to enhance maritime security and safety within the region in line with the 2050 Africa's Integrated Maritime Strategy.
