Port Stephens Council joins the global community in celebrating International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on Tuesday 3 December 2024.
The theme for IDPwD 2024 is 'Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future', highlighting people with disability as leaders, and the way leaders with disability make the world a fairer place for everyone.
Australians can host an event or start a conversation in their workplace, school or community to share and listen to unique stories of individuals with disability – both visible and invisible.
Mayor Leah Anderson says the day is an opportunity to celebrate all people in our diverse community in Port Stephens.
"International Day of People with Disability is an important opportunity to increase awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability," Mayor Anderson said.
"We want to recognise that everyone has a role to play in creating a truly inclusive and accessible place where everyone can thrive," she added.
In May 2024, Council endorsed its first Community Wellbeing Strategy and new Disability Inclusion Action Plan, taking steps towards creating a more inclusive and healthy community.
Building on the foundation set by these strategies, Port Stephens Council is now exploring the establishment of a Disability Inclusion Advisory Panel.
Councillor Jason Wells raised a Notice of Motion at the 26 November Council meeting requesting that Council report on the establishment of this panel, which was supported by all Councillors.
"To achieve a truly inclusive community, we need community representation, advice and advocacy to ensure everyone has a voice in shaping their life experience," Cr Wells said.
"This year's IDPwD theme of amplifying leadership really resonates with our proposal to create an Advisory Panel. It's so important for people with disability to be leaders at all levels, including at the local level," he added.
The Advisory Panel would offer Council a regular forum for discussion, consultation, collaboration, and advice from both residents with lived experience and those working in the disability sector across the community.
"Embracing inclusion is at the core of ensuring our community wellbeing, and the benefits extend far beyond meeting legal obligations. Our strategy reflects a commitment to making Port Stephens a place where everyone can thrive and lead, regardless of age, background, or ability," continued Cr Wells.
"By implementing strategies like the Community Wellbeing Strategy and Disability Inclusion Action Plan, and exploring the establishment of a Disability Inclusion Advisory Panel, we're taking significant steps toward creating a more inclusive and accessible future for all," concluded Cr Wells.
