With Summer finally upon us, Council reminds all pool owners and residents about pool safety and the importance to supervise children.
Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in young children with 17 children under the age of five losing their lives to drowning in 2021/22.
Portable swimming pools (also known as inflatable pools) are a popular and affordable choice this summer. Portable pools with a small volume of water pose a significant risk to small child drowning. If your pool has more than 30cm of water in it than there is a legal requirement to have your pool fenced and registered on NSW Swimming Pool Register. Here are four simple safety tips to reduce the risk of drowning:
- Supervise - Children should be always supervised by a responsible adult around swimming pools.
- Act - Learn what to do in the event of a drowning. Commence CPR as soon as the child is pulled from the water. Shout for assistance to call Emergency Services on 000.
- Fence - If a pool has more than 30cm water in it, there is a legal requirement for it to be fenced.
- Empty - When the pool is not in use, empty the water, deflate the portable pool and store out for reach of children.
