Here's our fifth postcard from Rothera, where exciting changes are transforming our largest Antarctic research station this month!
A new wind deflector
The new Discovery Building is taking shape with several major developments. A protective wind deflector now guards the building against Antarctic gales, while four large skylights flood the interior with natural light. The wind deflector helps to minimise the build up of snow around the building meaning there is less snow for us to clear.
Modernisation progress
Our team has connected the building's water system to the main station. Power now flows freely through four generators running round the clock, and we've successfully tested our fire safety systems. Working in an extreme environment means our people need to be fit and healthy and a 6-metre climbing wall is being built inside the building to help them practice.
The team is working hard on the interior, adding ceiling and wall panels, heating systems, and essential safety features. We've also fixed recent issues with the runway traffic lights ensuring smooth operations.
The latest photos (credit: BAM) from the station show our incredible progress in this unique Antarctic environment.
Future science and operations
This vital modernisation work will help Rothera continue its world-leading polar research for decades to come. We're looking forward to the big moment when the Discovery building is handed over to the British Antarctic Survey in May!
About the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme
The Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP) is part of the UK Government's long-term investment in the Polar Regions. The programme is delivered in partnership with construction partners BAM, Ramboll, Sweco and Hugh Broughton Architects.
