Power Meets UN Yemen Envoy Grundberg

USAID

On October 17, Administrator Samantha Power met with the UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg. During the meeting, Administrator Power reiterated the urgency of resolving the unjustified Houthi detentions of UN, NGO, and diplomatic staff. The Administrator thanked Special Envoy Grundberg for his diplomacy and continued public calls for the immediate, unconditional release of those detained. Both leaders expressed serious concern about recent reports that some detainees have been referred for criminal prosecution on false charges of espionage, which carries the possibility of a death sentence. They noted this development marks a significant turning point and warrants coordinated levels of international advocacy. Administrator Power and Special Envoy Grundberg emphasized the need for continued diplomatic pressure to secure the release of all remaining detainees and support for the continuation of a peace process in Yemen.
