Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up Starts In Zone 1

Darwin City Council

Residents in Zone 1 are reminded to place their eligible items on the verge this weekend, Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September, for collection as part of City of Darwin's Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up.

The Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up is a free verge collection service to remove unwanted household items that are too big for the kerbside wheelie bin.

City of Darwin Chief Executive Officer Simone Saunders said the service provided residents an opportunity to get rid of unwanted items that would otherwise end up in landfill.

"The annual Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up is a great chance to remove all the unwanted, and potentially dangerous, items from your home," Ms Saunders said.

"Our crews will collect all items and send them back to Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility for reuse and recycling where possible.

"This is a good opportunity to prevent unwanted items going to landfill, as well as ensuring the safety of the neighbourhood and residents.

"Items put on the verge after that zone's clean-up weekend dates will not be collected and will be the resident's responsibility to remove," she said.

Zone 1 suburbs are Alawa, Anula, Brinkin, Casuarina, Jingili, Karama, Leanyer, Lyons, Malak, Marrara, Moil, Muirhead, Nakara, Tiwi, Wagaman, Wanguri, and Wulagi.

Eligible items include furniture, whitegoods (with shelves and doors removed), mattresses and scrap metals from items such as BBQs and bikes.

Items such as glass, mirrors, paint and liquids are prohibited and can become a hazard to the community if left on the verge. Please help keep our community safe and only put out what can be picked up.

Up to two cubic metres can be collected per household.
