Residents in Zone 2 are reminded to place their eligible items on the verge this weekend, Saturday 14 September and Sunday 15 September, for collection as part of City of Darwin's Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up.
The Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up is a free verge collection service to remove unwanted household items that are too big for the kerbside wheelie bin.
City of Darwin Chief Executive Officer Simone Saunders said the service provided residents an opportunity to get rid of unwanted items that would otherwise end up in landfill and that may become hazardous in the event of a cyclone.
"The annual Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up is a great chance to clean up at home and remove items that are unwanted, broken or cannot be repaired, and which could be reused or recycled," Ms Saunders said.
"Our crews have been working hard collecting items from Zone 1 that have been taken back to Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility for reuse and recycling, where possible.
"Now, it is time for residents in Zone 2 to place their items out for collection.
"When you put items on your verge, please remember to place items safely so they do not fall over or move around and make sure items are clear of footpaths, gutters and roads.
"Grouping items by material type and leaving space between groups makes it easier for our crews to quickly allocate items for recycling and reuse," she said.
Items put on the verge after each zone's clean-up weekend dates will not be collected and will be the resident's responsibility to remove.
Zone 2 suburbs are: Bayview, Berrimah, Coconut Grove, Cullen Bay, Darwin City, Eaton, Fannie Bay, Larrakeyah, Ludmilla, Millner, Nightcliff, Rapid Creek, Parap, Stuart Park, The Gardens, The Narrows, Woolner, Winnellie
Up to two cubic metres can be collected per household. Eligible items include furniture, whitegoods (with shelves and doors removed), mattresses and scrap metals from items such as BBQs and bikes.
Items such as glass, mirrors, paint and liquids are prohibited and can become a hazard to the community if left on the verge. Please help keep our community safe and only put out what can be picked up.
