Pre-Election Communications Restrictions by Snowy Monaro Council

Council is providing notice of changes to our communications and operations that come into effect for the 40 days prior to the Local Government Elections on Saturday 14 September 2024.

From Monday 5 August 2024 until election day, Snowy Monaro Regional Council (SMRC) will not be publishing any content – or undertaking any Council-organised activity – that has the potential to generate media or publicity that may influence any individual voter's decision on who to vote for.

'These measures are in place to maintain a level playing field for all candidates and ensure Council resources are not used to advantage or disadvantage any individuals seeking election as an SMRC councillor,' said Council's CEO David Hogan.

Key changes you may notice:

  • No appearances in media or content by the Mayor or councillors in Council communications
  • Reduced Council posts on social media
  • Limiting media releases and public notices to operational matters only
  • Cancellation of non-essential events and ceremonies involving councillors
    • Councillor participation restricted to performing legislated role only

Additional operational restrictions also come into effect from Friday 16 August 2024.

During this time, Council will go into caretaker mode where no major policy decisions or major contracts will be entered into.

Council will remain in caretaker mode until the NSW Electoral Commission determines the elections results and the first Council meeting is held on Thursday 10 October 2024.

'While day-to-day Council services will continue as normal, we ask for the community's understanding as we scale back some of our usual engagement and communications activities during this time – as is required of all councils,' said Mr Hogan.

'These arrangements as we approach the election help safeguard the democratic process as our community prepares to elect its new Council.'
