Murrindindi Shire Council is encouraging community members to start preparing now for the upcoming fire season by knowing the risks, preparing homes and properties and having a fire plan in place.
According to the Country Fire Authority (CFA), Victorians can expect a hotter and drier summer than recent years. While the Fire Danger Period has not yet been declared for Murrindindi Shire, it's critical to prepare now for bushfires, grassfires and extreme weather events.
In recent years, several grass fires have been started by mowers and slashers that hadn't been maintained. Now is a good time to service equipment, including mowers, chainsaws, and slashers, and ensure it is ready to safely operate.
Residents are encouraged to clean up their property by making use of Council's free green waste disposal service at our Resource Recovery Centres in Alexandra, Yea, Kinglake, Marysville and Eildon, which has been extended until 31 December 2023.
Council has simplified its burning off laws to make it easier for residents to maintain their properties in preparation for the summer fire season. Residents can burn off at any time (excluding the Fire Danger Period) without requiring a permit, providing they meet certain safety conditions, which are outlined here.
