The Clonbinane Bushfire Management Group Community Bushfire Preparedness Day was held on Sunday 17 February 2019.
Residents were encouraged to prepare their properties for bushfire by clearing up around their homes and dropping off the green waste free of charge at three central bins located around Waterford Park.
The three skip bins were sponsored by Mitchell Shire Council, and the event was so popular that the overflowing bins had to be removed and replaced multiple times.
Residents who needed help with cleaning up their properties or were unable to get their green waste to a bin were supported by local volunteers who removed vegetation for them and transported it to the bins.
The response from residents was overwhelming and has encouraged the group to try to make it an annual event.
Residents commented that it was a great local initiative and was much appreciated by those who would have struggled with the green waste otherwise and sent a big thanks to all involved.
The day also helped build a sense of community with one long-term resident commenting that she had met neighbours she had never spoken to before.
The Clonbinane Bushfire Management Group was formed as part of the Safer Together program and the day was supported by Mitchell Shire Council, CFA, Landcare and the Clonbinane Community Action Group.
