Preparing To Honour Anzac Day In France

RAAF

As dawn approaches in France, members of Australia's Federation Guard are making final preparations to mark Anzac Day on historic grounds.

Representing Navy, Army and Air Force, Australia's Federation Guard will lead the ceremonial duties, bringing precision and dignity to a commemorative event that bridges generations of service.

Flight Lieutenant Sarah Griffin, France Anzac Day Contingent Commander, said commemorating the day on former battlefields gave the experience a powerful sense of place and purpose.

"Service unites us - with our history, with each other and with the Australian people," Flight Lieutenant Griffin said.

"It's an honour to stand here and represent that legacy."

Anzac Day honours the service and sacrifice of all Australians who have worn the uniform, beginning with Gallipoli in 1915.

In France, the day holds special significance - more than 290,000 Australians served on the Western Front with more than 46,000 never returning home.

In battles such as Pozières, Fromelles and Bullecourt, Australian troops fought alongside France forces to defend shared values.

In Villers-Bretonneux, Australian troops played a decisive role in liberating the town in April 1918, a bond that has not been forgotten by the local community.

Today, French school children still learn the words "do not forget Australia", a reminder of the lasting ties forged in war.

For Lance Corporal Matthew Walker, preparing for the dawn service is a reminder of what it means to serve today.

"Being here shows that our service still matters," he said.

"We're not just remembering history, we're part of it."

As Anzac Day approaches, the ADF contingent stands ready, grounded in history, committed to service and proud to represent the Australian people on foreign soil.
