The Prime Ministers walk in Bardwell Valley is set for an upgrade following a Council resolution at a Council Meeting on Wednesday 22 May 2024.
The Prime Ministers Walk was designed to celebrate the Prime Ministers of the first 100 years of Federation, and plaques containing information of former Prime Ministers were strategically placed along the walking path that runs along Bardwell Creek from Bexley Pool towards Jubilee Bridge.
The plaques commemorating Australia's Centenary of Federation were funded from the Federal Government's Federation Community Projects grant and Prime Ministers Walk was officially opened in September 2001.
The last plaque in the walk belongs to John Howard who was Prime Minister from March 11, 1996 to December 3 , 2001.
Council continued to add plaques to the walk until 2014 however increased vandalism led to the removal of the plaques for Prime Ministers' Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, and Tony Abbott.
Council is now examining ways to expand the original project and will now seek suitable funding, like that provided by the Federal Government for the existing plaques, to reactivate the Prime Ministers Walk.
Mayor Bill Saravinovski said:
"Many residents have asked why the more recent Prime Ministers were removed and why more current Prime Ministers have not been added to the plaques along the walk," Mayor Bull Saravinovski said.
"I hope Council is able to continue this project that adds to the interest of this pleasant walk."
