Summary
This privacy impact assessment (PIA) is the first of two assessments for our new data tool, Aotearoa Data Explorer (ADE), developed as part of the Customer Data Tools project (CDTP).
The project was divided in two phases. The first phase consisted of replacing our dissemination platform NZ.Stat with a new tool called 'Aotearoa Data Explorer'. This is essentially a version upgrade from the current platform and is developed by the SIS-CC (Statistical Information System Collaboration Community), whose members are various statistical organisations around the world.
Aotearoa Data Explorer does not manage any personal information. All the data we publish has been confidentialised as required by section 39 of the Data and Statistics Act 2022 and in accordance with Stats NZ's Information, privacy, security, and confidentiality policy.
An example of how the policy is applied to a particular output can be found in the paper Methodological standard for confidentiality in the 2023 Census includes an example of how the policy is applied to a particular output.
Phase 1 released a beta version to a small group of customers, which helped to test the platform and collect feedback. The production release of Aotearoa Data Explorer will allow us to decommission the current data platform NZ.Stat.
This PIA covers the phase of replacing the NZ.Stat tool with the new tool, Aotearoa Data Explorer.
Privacy impact assessment for collecting information from people who use Aotearoa Data Explorer covers the second phase of the project. It includes assessment of the registration and analytics features that will be included when ADE goes live.
