Summary

Stats NZ has begun the process of developing its second long-term insights briefing (LTIB), to be published in 2026. Our first LTIB, called 'Aotearoa New Zealand: Empowered by data', was published last year.

Under the Public Services Act 2020, government agencies are required to produce an LTIB every three years. The purpose of these briefings is to inform the public about medium- and long-term trends, risks and opportunities. They are think-pieces on the future, not government policy.

LTIBs take approximately 24 months to complete. This is because there are several legislated steps. This includes two rounds of public consultation (one on the proposed topic and scope, and one on the draft briefing), presentation to the House, and Select Committee scrutiny.

Chief executives are responsible for selecting the topic. Our proposed topic is: 'The Future of Eco-nomics: Integrating Environmental and Economic Measurement in Aotearoa New Zealand'. It will present the case for better integration of economic and environmental metrics, and the emerging challenges and opportunities in this space.

We intend to publicly consult on the topic and scope in late August 2024 for a period of six weeks. Individuals and organisations will be able to make a submission via email or through an online submission form. The online submission form will be made using MS Forms and will be embedded on the Stats NZ website. MS Forms is an application within Microsoft's M365 suite that is used frequently within Stats NZ for consultation.

Feedback received through consultation will then be summarised in a Submissions Report, which will be uploaded to the Stats NZ website. The key findings will be used to inform the development of the LTIB.
